W/E 20-21st August 2016 – ILLW
We had a great weekend up at Barrenjoey, filled a few pages of the log book and ticked off a bunch of lighthouses. Richard NRA had some early success with his portable SOTA station while the rest of us battled high winds putting up the main station antennas. We got on air a bit late, but we […]

August 2016 Lecture – Can Home Solar Power and Ham Radio Coexist?
Watch on youtube The August 2016 lecture will be given by Graham Town. We invited him to talk on renewable energy (mostly solar) and RFI issues this generation produces…. The idea for this talk came from the April QST article “Can Home Solar Power and Ham Radio Coexist?” More background at: https://web.science.mq.edu.au/directory/listing/person.htm?id=gtown
Book of Resistance
I got tired of wasting so much time looking for the right resistor in my resistor box. I’ve got a good span of values, but not many of each. I decided to buy a photo album and have 1 page per value, took me 2 hrs to organise but will save me so much, more […]
DMM leads into the PSU
When working on projects I often need to plug my DMM leads into my bench power supply to test PSU voltage, current drain, probe voltage onto the circuit, etc. My PSUs have banana female plugs, I only use the spade side of the plugs, not the front holes. I tend to poke the test leads […]
Flower Pot Antenna on a wire
Here is a very handy aerial for permanent and field day installations. We’ve used VK2ZOI Half-Wave Flower Pot Antenna’s design, however we’ve only used the UPVC conduit for the choke section. This gives us a 2m aerial on a wire. It can be raised by pulling from the top, typically with a rope over a […]
Lego Iambic Key
Poor man’s morse key
Youtube video zoomed pictures, the shorter key is “iambic”. It apparently made it to the Australian favourite ham radio magazine.
Sun 18-Dec-2016 BYOE BBQ from 4pm
Another successful MWRS Xmas BBQ! 35 people attended. We were prepared for both, a possible total fire band and a possible showery day! The showers during the week had removed the total fire ban threat. A cloudy sky provided us with an enjoyable cool afternoon. ****************************************************************************** Keep Sunday 18-Dec-2016 free for the annual MWRS xmas BBQ, […]
Fri 25-Nov-2016 Xmas Dinner
Our Christmas dinner was a success this year again with 40 people attending. Apart from the good company, people also praised the location for proximity, ample car parkings, food and the fact that we could actually hear each others. The attendees list is in the link below. As discussed at a business meeting, it was agreed […]
Anderson on Jiffy boxes
Many projects require Anderson plugs to power circuits in jiffy boxes. Here is a way to do it. The Anderson plugs have a flat side and a side with the hooks sticking out. I faced the flat side onto the lid. This will require that you either remove the lip on the edge of the lid, […]
Quick & Cheap Iambic Key
Got keyer in your rig but don’t want to invest into an iambic key without really knowing if you will like it? Here is a very simple and cheap key to get your started. A stereo 1/4 inch plug, 2 short copper wires, et voilà. Can be used as right hand or left hand key, […]
CTCSS on Phillips FM92
In 1998 a large quantity of VHF FM92 radios hit the market at give away prices. The MWRS had obtained enough to supply every member at the time, many took this opportunity, they were cheap and robust. They were not small but most of them came with a remote head. Many ended up as a […]
