Special Interest Groups (SIG for short) are MWRS communities focussed on particular areas of shared interest; they facilitate cooperation, learning and activities within that interest.

Each SIG provides an opportunity to learn and share practical skills and knowledge with the support of others who share a similar interest. Online discussion in the Club’s discussion group is a regular part of the SIG day to day activity.

The Society currently has three Special Interest Groups:

Builders and Makers SIG

Contact: Richard VK2ARH  mwrs.org.au+builder@gmail.com

This SIG is for members who enjoy building equipment, such as electronics projects, kits, radio equipment, antennas, test equipment, etc.

Some of the group’s activity will be in the form of ‘group builds’ at the clubhouse. Any member of the SIG can initiate and share a project they are working on, inviting others to participate in the build.

Items of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Electronic project construction
  • Design and manufacturing your own PCBs
  • Using and programming microcontrollers
  • Building radios and radio related equipment
  • Learning and using test equipment
  • Antenna construction

The scope of the SIG will grow and evolve along with the interest and knowledge of the participants.

Portable Operations SIG

Contact: Colin VK2JCC, mwrs.org.au+portable@gmail.com

This SIG is for those who want to break out of “the shack”, take their radios out into the field and operate portable. Activity revolves around equipment to be used, portable radios, antennas etc. The group coordinates field activations in public parks around Northern Sydney, usually followed by a chinwag at a nearby café. These park activations are usually on Friday mornings from 8am, with a different park chosen each week.

3D Printing & Design SIG

Contact: Simon VK2YU  mwrs.org.au+3DP@gmail.com

Want to learn about 3D printers and making things with them? This is the SIG for you! 3D printers can be a great asset for the Amateur Radio enthusiast with their ability to produce a range of items that can be used within the hobby.
