Carmel VK2NO talks about the discovery she made when researching traveling wave helix antennas, while building her own axial mode antenna.
Normally used for satellite operation in the higher bands, these antennas are cumbersome and too large for the lower bands to be practical. Disregarded by the theorists during development of helix antennas for UHF and above, Carmel devised a workable method for building a relatively compact VHF helix antenna that has near enough gain similar to the larger full wave counterpart, and comparable with Yagi results. She discusses the basic theory of the traveling wave helix antenna and shows her own adaptation for VHF portable operation.
