Edward (Ted) Bastow was a Radio Telegraphist in the Royal Australian Navy from 1950 to 1957, and worked from both ships and naval wireless shore stations. After leaving the service Ted worked on commercial coast radio stations VIS, VIG, VJZ, VIR, VIH and VIB until about 1980. He has had a few callsigns since first licensed – VK2QM in 1964, VK2BAS in 1965, VK9TBin 1965-1970, operating from Port Moresby from 1965 to 1969, and Rabaul in1970. His callsign VK2WL has been held since July 1970. Ted was active on both HF and VHF packet, CW and phone. Ted also played around with other digital modes (PSK, SSTV etc) from time to time.
Although Ted was a member of MWRS for many years, he hasn’t been able to make it up to meetings recently due to his illness. Sadly Ted passed away on 2nd October 2019. Vale, Ted.
