Up The Stick!

Back in the 1980’s, Sydney radio presenter Doug Mulray’s program featured a character named Jack Africa, who would supposedly phone and make amusing conversation with him. One of his catch phrases was “up the stick!”, e.g. “…you’ve got the power, Mullows [i.e. Mulray], you send it UP THE STICK!“, the catch phrase at the end typically bellowed. As Mulray is a native of the Northern Beaches, like MWRS, one club newsletter editor of the time (Richard VK2SKY) thought it would make a good title for the monthly publication.

In this modern Internet era, printed newsletters are somewhat archaic, but at least one edition comes out at the annual general meeting each July, keeping the name alive.
