The club’s Morse Code enthusiasts were out in force on Wednesday night. Yves VK2AUJ had declared the evening a competition to see who had the best Morse Key display.

All manner of keys were produced from an antique light-signaling device, to a paddle keyer built mainly from LEGO bricks (and a few microswitches), to one made from a recycled hacksaw blade.

In the end, the prize (a nice bottle of wine donated by Yves and Connie VK2CON) went to Russell VK2BYN’s shiny Vibroplex key. Russell (pictured at right, with his key and the prize) explained that the key design is over a hundred years old (Vibroplex has been making Morse keys since 1890). That the design—and the company—have been around for so long says a lot about both. Russell’s view is that “you can’t improve on perfection!”
