Well the field day was fun, we operated 6m through 23cm from the oval just behind the scout hall near the club. We had one contact on 23cm, it’s the first time Nick VK2FS has activated 23cm in Oz since he came from England over 20 years ago. Well done Nick! Of course, these things are never straightforward and the 23cm contact (just east of Katoomba) powered in on 2m and 70cm but his 23cm antenna was fixed position and pointing north of our location. He was weak but we got him!

I had the FT897 working on a 6m dipole up a squid pole, Nick had his IC7000 doing duties on 2m, 70cm and an IC735 through a couple of transverters to get up to 23cm. We made 32 contacts in all, which is a big improvement on previous efforts.

Ripper of a day – the sun was out, wind was cold but it died down a bit.. when the sun went it was time to pack up and go home though. I even got a little sunburnt, not bad for a few days past the shortest day of the year!

Chris YY’s 2m beam worked well, and was nicely directional giving significant gain when we zeroed in on the correct bearing. Look forward to getting it up the tower at the club.

Thanks also to Dom JNA, Matt ACL and Charlie GMT for stopping by to see how things were going and lend a hand with antennas and masts!
