We were honoured to have A/Prof Clare McArthur and A/Prof Cathy Herbert, both from the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney, give talks about the use of technology in the tracking of wildlife. A/Prof McArthur spoke about her work on the ecology of brushtail possums. Surprisingly, individual possums have personality, which can be studied with tracking and other technology. A/Prof Herbert has studied food selection, reproductive status and social interactions of kangaroos using video, global positioning system and radio technology. Both speakers explained that limitations of off-the-shelf technology included weight, cost, battery life and accuracy of location information. Avenues for collaboration with the MWRS were also discussed.
