Arthur Gerald Sabin (VK2AGS) passed away early on 5th August 2015. He was our oldest and longest-serving member having joined in 1934, only a few years after our club’s foundation (1923)! Gerald contributed much over his many decades of MWRS membership and will be greatly missed.

Gerald also appears a number of times in the National Library of Australia online archives (aka Trove), for example:

His media appearances predated the Radio Society by several years, e.g. in the
Wagga Wagga Advertiser, on 6 October 1919 when Gerald and his brother Eric won first prize of 15 shillings for their fancy dress costumes as Dick Whittington and his Cat.
He had a later cameo appearance on 21 April 1923 at the opening of a cafe to support a girls’ hostel.

Update, September 2020:
Archives of Amateur Radio magazine have recently appeared online, and we have found a mention of Gerald in the October 1942 edition:
From Cpl. Sabin, R.A.A.F. Darwin comes news also of the ham spirit. Before the war he was a member of the Manly Radio Club and was sent up to N/W Australia. Meeting there a chap from VK5 by name of Bob Fuller – they did some fag and at the local post-office sat and passed for the “ticket” so no time would be lost when it was time to call CQ again. Don’t you reckon those two will make good hams–congratulations OMs – very FB indeed.
