Greg Vk2XE at his station using vertical mid loaded with radials

Story from Dominic VK2JNA.

We drove down with Simon VK2YU down to Native Dog Flat just after Christmas time. Also there were Greg VK2XE and Andy VK2EAH, as well as our friend Shonky and his mate Tim. We’ve been camping in Native dog flat, not in our normal spot, but we’ve really quite enjoyed it. Burnt lots of wood and had a good time, set up some dipole aerials so we can talk to people on the 7189 net at 8am every day, as well as talking around on 40 metres and a few others on 7085khz. We had a bit of a day out yesterday and drove up the Rams Head track, which is quite entertaining for people with new 4WD and then climbed up on top where Greg VK2XE set up his POTA station to talk around the place, and we had a good contact to Gerard, VK2IO who was north of Newcastle. That was quite a hop on five watts, even though we didn’t get many other stations because of our low power, it was a lot of fun. We then proceeded some of us down to McKillops Bridge to go and have a swim in the snowy River, which is quite refreshing and well worth the trip down there, particularly for those who’ve never been there before. Lots of campfires, lots of chatting and mucking around, and today we’re just having a little sojourn into the local township of Omeo to get get some fuel and meat pies and bits and pieces before we head back to camp. Simon and I will travel back to Sydney on the 31st and the other guy’s a little bit later.

We’ve bumped into a number hams inc Mike VK3MPV & found a 4WD with flat tyre VK3NDP.

We’ve chatted with lots of club members (tnx everyone) & also Peter in Canberra VK1PHR. As far as radio goes we find that on a big antenna (say dipole or similar) we can hear everyone. We don’t miss much as the noise floor is *so* low which is one of the draw cards for taking our ham equipment portable
