A dark and chilly evening at the club, but the Cubs were keen!

In between JOTA events, the club hosts visits from local Scouting groups. This evening, we had a visit from Frenchs Forest Cubs.

13 Cubs in all descended on the clubhouse, and were treated to some radio activities.

Des VK2TGJ ran the “build a station” activity (one of our JOTA staples). The challenge is to put together a working radio station, as one might need to do in an emergency situation. The kids are presented with a VHF mobile transceiver, a power supply, a mast with antenna on the top, which they usually have to raise from the ground and secure with guy wires, an SWR meter and assorted cables. The aim is to get the station working and make a contact

Of course, we had operators (Tommy VK2AHA, Colin VK2JCC, Brendan VK2YMI and daughter Brianna) on hand to “just happen” to hear their calls and make the contact on two metres.

Simon VK2YU ran the club’s HF station with Rod VK2ZZM on the other end of the circuit.

Meanwhile, Greg VK2XE was teaching another group about frequencies, bands and radio signal propagation.

Brian VK2AXC introduced the visitors to Morse Code and and ITU phonetics.

Thanks to Jeff MZZ for organising everything, and Mal VK2TMF for “kid wrangling”.

Thanks to all that helped and support the club in this way!
