As all our regular visitors know, playing radios with the Scouts isn’t just a once-a-year thing for us, so we had another visit from one of the local Scout groups, this time 2nd Turramurra Cubs.

As usual, we give our young visitors a taste of the hobby, and what they might experience if they come back for another visit during JOTA, the international Jamboree On the Air.

As usual, we engaged the visitors with a number of different activities. Jeff VK2MZZ introduced the club radio shack and operating HF, assisted by accomplices Mike VK2MDP and Rod VK2MZZ ready and waiting on 7085kHz.

Our Submariner-in-Residence, Richard VK2NRA took them through the basics of cryptography and secret codes…

Des VK2TGJ and Brian VK2AXC guided them through setting up an emergency radio station (rather topical given the recent fire situation in the northern hemisphere and our own approaching fire season.) This included the essential raising of the mast to get the antenna in the air.

All in all, another fun visit from our friends in the Scouting movement, and a good JOTA practice run for us!

Thanks also to Tim VK2BT and Mal VK2TMF for support on the night.
