
According to the provisions of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974, all ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards, and passenger ships irrespective of size, engaged on international voyages, shall be equipped with the radio equipment of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
This equipment must undergo an annual comprehensive inspection performed in accordance with the rules set out in the above-mentioned IMO Resolution A.1156 (32) and a number of other instruments including those related to national legislation.
At the Society’s June lecture, our speaker was a GMDSS surveyor who discussed the survey requirements, and demonstrated the testing of a VHF radio, SART, EPIRB and HF tests.
The presenter, Raffaele Civitella, is Principal Radio Surveyor / Marine Electronics Engineer at Electrotech Australia. A colleague of Mal VK2TMF, he has had a long history in the maritime world, starting at Amalgamated Wireless Australasia in the commercial maritime world.
