Erika Davies from Macquarie University presented our May Lecture on MRI machines:

“Have you damaged your knee? Slipped a disc? Regardless of the
specifics, many of us have had first-hand experience with magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI), but not many of us are aware that this
extremely pricey bit of kit is essentially a collection of amplifiers
and transmit/receive coils operating in the radio frequency band of
the electromagnetic spectrum. In this brief introduction to magnetic
resonance you will find out why this is, and what other applications
exist for this insensitive yet incredibly powerful technique.

Good morning gents

I hope you’re all well!  In case it may be of interest, I thought I would let you know about a blog I am keeping as a record of the decomissioning and subsequent dissection of one of our superconducting magnets.  It gives a rather unique perspective on these majestic beasties!  The blog can be found here:

Warm regards
